February's butterfly is the Painted Lady. This butterfly spends the winter as an adult. You may see it flying on warm winter days if any spent the winter in Arkansas. It is more typical to see them as they migrate north in spring and south in fall.
Creating awareness about butterflies since 1981! My name is Lori A. Spencer, also known as Arkansas's Butterfly Lady. I have been studying butterflies since I was 11 years old, when bringing an insect to class was a fifth-grade homework assignment. I brought in a black swallowtail caterpillar, and once it developed into a butterfly, I was completely hooked. I received a Master of Science degree from the University of Arkansas, and I have continued this quest of butterfly awareness and conservation ever since. I reside with my husband on Mount Magazine, near Paris, Arkansas. Maybe I'll see you one of these days while out butterflying!
